San José Small Business Start-Up Grant

The City of San José’s Office of Economic Development and Cultural Affairs (OEDCA) Small Business Start-Up Grant program is now open! Deadline to apply is Friday, March 6, 2026.

Purpose

This new funding opportunity will support early-stage small businesses owners in all industries, including home-based businesses. Grant funds will support an eligible business's start-up expenses, such as licensing, equipment purchase, staff training, loan down payments, or other activities that help support the launch, of a new business.

Up to 20 grants totaling $150,000 will be awarded:

  • 10 grants of $10,000
  • 10 grants of $5,000

Eligibility 

  • Registered in San José and with a business tax certificate less than 3 years old
  • Business owners must both operate their business and reside within the City of San José
  • A for-profit business
  • Maximum up to 35 employees
  • Commit to using funds for business startup purposes
  • Are open to participate in required advising or training sessions
  • Are not a business selling tobacco, cannabis or liquor

Only one application per business is allowed.

Applicants may apply in person with assistance in English, Spanish and Vietnamese at San José City Hall. Open drop-in hours for assistance will be held every Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. from January 23 to March 6, 2026 at City Hall, 17th Floor.
