With the battery technology and production industry as dynamic as ever, staff from San José's Office of Economic Development and Cultural Affairs and San José Clean Energy were pleased to attend the opening of Lyten’s Lithium-Sulfur battery pilot line on June 14th at its new location in North San José.
Lyten’s 145,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility, located in Alviso in North San José, will be its central location for manufacturing the company’s Lithium-Sulfur batteries as well as its headquarters. Founded in 2015, Lyten is changing the way we think about batteries and other advanced products . Because on their innovative material 3D Graphene™, they can produce products that are lighter, stronger, and safer. In addition to these benefits, Lyten’s 3D Graphene™ technology, which is 300 times stronger than steel yet significantly lighter, is a means to reduce greenhouse gas pollution and lead the charge toward a decarbonized future. They will begin delivering commercial battery cells this year to customers in the defense, automotive, logistics, and satellite sectors.
Lyten is a welcomed addition to North San José, which continues to be a hub of research and development within the city. This area of San José houses a growing cluster of companies working on emerging technologies, including battery technology, electric vehicles, computer programming, and biotechnology fields.
San José has long been known as the capital of Silicon Valley, in part because of it being a prolific producer of electronics hardware. Companies like Lyten are drawn to San José today because of access to diverse talent, high STEM college degree attainment, relatively affordable South Bay real estate, and a business-friendly climate that welcomes cutting-edge development.
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Lyten’s Co-Founder and CEO, Dan Cook, remarked on the ability of this new technology to truly disrupt the battery industry, leading to better access and less expensive products down the road. In a press release, Cook stated “Lyten is taking a leadership role in helping to ramp up a domestic battery supply chain in America,”.
Lyten currently employs about 250 people, including engineers, technicians, and scientists. The company is leveraging its new space to continue expanding its capabilities and workforce. We look forward to seeing Lyten continue to grow and thrive here in San José!
