Recap of the February 22 Flea Market Vendor Meeting

On Wednesday, February 22, the City of San José held an in-person meeting at the Berryessa Community Center to present the final charter for the Flea Market Advisory Group and kick off the member selection process. This was the culmination of a 6-month long stakeholder engagement process. The meeting was well-attended by vendors from the Berryessa Flea Market, who came together to celebrate this milestone and learn more about how to apply for a vendor representative seat.

The meeting was conducted in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese, with bilingual staff available to ensure that everyone was able to participate. Light appetizers and beverages were provided, and supervised activities were available for kids ages 4 and up.

The presentation of the final charter was a key part of the meeting, as it outlines the purpose of the Flea Market Advisory Group and the roles and responsibilities of its members. Staff and its consultant team drafted the charter based on input from the vendor community, asked for comments on the draft, and made revisions based on feedback received. The City of San José expressed its appreciation for the involvement of the vendors in shaping the Advisory Group.

After the presentation of the final charter, the City of San José provided information on how to apply for one of the four seats open to all vendors. Of the 11 voting members on the Flea Market Advisory Group, six will be nominated by the Berryessa Flea Market Vendor Association, who has played an active leadership role through the rezoning process. One seat will represent the property owner. Staff answered questions, offered paper applications, and encouraged interested vendors to submit their applications by the deadline of March 27th.

Overall, the February 22 meeting was a productive event, with vendors and City officials coming together to work towards a common goal. The City of San José has demonstrated its commitment to engaging with the vendor community and ensuring that their voices are heard in the Flea Market transition process. We look forward to seeing the progress of the Flea Market Advisory Group and the positive impact it will have on the Berryessa Flea Market and its vendors.
