Each quarter, Office of Economic Development & Cultural Affairs produces a report that quantifies the construction and general development projects in San Jose. This report, which includes an interactive map and a detailed project list, tracks the city’s progress towards our goals for housing, job creation, business retention and placemaking.
The list does not include every project on file with the City but it provides insight into the projects that represent several thousand housing units and several million square feet of office space proposed for the City.
Plan Review
Over the past few months, the Planning Department received new applications for key development projects including the Urban Catalyst Echo project, and Westbank's new project at Terraine - the project formerly known as Block H or North San Pedro Tower 3.
Overall, Planning review is currently underway on proposals for:
- 669,040 square feet of commercial space
- 5.19 million square feet of office space
- 968 hotel rooms
- 7,914 housing units, 1,458 which were submitted for review in the last quarter.
Approved
Several large development projects were approved this last quarter, notably the Boston Properties’ South Almaden Office project and Westbank's Arbor and Park Habitat (formerly Museum Place) projects. The key development projects that were approved by Planning this fall include:
- 886 housing units
- 15,365 square feet of commercial space
- 3.55 million square feet of office development
Under Construction
Construction is anticipated for several more projects City-wide as the following are under pre-construction review with Building and/or Public Public Works Departments:
- 2,775 housing units
- 90,426 square feet of commercial space
- 4.2 million square feet of office space
Significant project at this stage are the Garden Gate project at 600 South 1st Street and The Carlysle at 51 Notre Dame.
In the Fall of 2021, construction kicked off on Eden Housing's 425 Auzerais Apartments project and construction continues on 4,164 housing units, 610,000 square feet of commercial space, and 4.56 million square feet of office space. Construction wrapped up on Hanover's 715 West Julian St project, bringing 249 new residential units to the market, and we should see some other projects come to completion in the early part of 2022 as well.
