To help small businesses during this difficult time, the City of San José has extended and expanded its Business Tax Exemption program for businesses facing financial hardship.
What period is covered?
If you qualify, you will not have to pay your San José Business Tax if your renewal date is between Oct. 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022.
Who can apply?
Any kind of business OR business owner can apply if:
For 2020:
- The business’s gross receipts were $25,520 or less OR
- The business owner personal adjusted gross income (AGI) was $51,040 or less
For 2021:
- The business’s anticipated gross receipts are $25,760 or less OR
- The business owner’s anticipated adjusted gross income (AGI) is $51,520 or less
NOTE - If you have already received a Business Tax Exemption before Oct. 1, 2021, you will need to reapply.
How do I show that I qualify?
A business owner can use their anticipated income for 2021 in the application. If you receive an exemption based on anticipated income for 2021 you will need to present your 2021 federal and state tax returns the next time you renew your San José Business Tax to verify the exemption.
