| TAINAN, TAIWAN
San Jose established a sister city affiliation with Tainan, Taiwan in 1977. Mayor Hsu Tain-tsair and a delegation from Tainan visited San Jose in August 2007 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the sister city relationship.
During the past 30 years, the cities have forged a closer linkage through initiatives in trade and commerce, culture, education, government and civic affairs.
Located in southern Taiwan on the South China Sea, Tainan is Taiwan’s oldest city, dating back to the 1500s. Tainan is known as the “Culture Capital” for its unique place in Taiwan’s history. Tainan is also known as the “Phoenix City” for the many colorful flame or phoenix trees that are found throughout the city.
Today, Tainan has over 760,000 residents and is the island’s fourth largest city. Tainan is divided into six districts.
Agriculture is a leading sector of Tainan’s economy and the city is one the world’s largest exporters of rice and sugar. A decade ago, Taiwan’s national government built a 4,000-acre science-based industrial park in Tainan County. The industrial park is home to many of Taiwan’s leading technology companies and businesses from throughout the world. The Southern Taiwan Innovation and Research Park has transformed Tainan as one of Asia’s leading regions for knowledge-based industries.
Tainan is well known in Asia for its institutes of higher education, including the National Cheung Kung University, Chang Jung Christian University, Southern Taiwan University of Technology and the National University of Tainan.
