SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA
The City of San Jose established a sister city affiliation with San Jose, the capital city of the Republic of Costa Rica, in 1961. Founded in 1737, San Jose has 1.5 million residents, nearly half of Costa Rica’s population.
San Jose is surrounded by mountains that form the Cordillera of the Talamanca and the Central Volcanic Cordillera.
San Jose and Costa Rica is known for its natural beauty and comfortable year-round climate. Located a short distance from San Jose, Irazu is an active volcano, and the Braulio Carrillo National Park, known for its lush tropical forest and raging waterfalls, attracts visitors from throughout the world. The Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean are located within a two-hour drive from San Jose.
There is a strong European influence in San Jose and Costa Rica, including the architecture of historic buildings. Costa Rica has a strong educational system and several universities and institutes are located in the capital, including the University of Costa Rica.
