PUNE, INDIA
San Jose and Pune established a sister city relationship in 1992.
Pune is located near India’s western coast on the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers in the state of Maharashtra, and about 125 miles from India’s commercial capital, Mumbai. With a population of over three million residents, Pune is India’s eighth largest city and second largest in Maharashtra. Pune has 14 districts or Talukas, covering 430 square kilometers.
Pune is thought to date back to as early as 90 B.C. and was ruled by several dynasties. The city’s more recent history with the Maratha Empire began in the late 1500s.
Pune is situated on the Deccan Plateau, a rich agricultural region known for its wheat, sugarcane and cotton. Referred to as the “Oxford of the East,” the city is known throughout India for its outstanding universities and higher education institutions, which have contributed to Pune’s industrial development, particularly in software and other information technology sectors. Pune has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing information technology regions.
The Pune Municipal Corporation has administered the city of Pune since 1950. The Municipal Commissioner is the Chief Executive of the Pune Municipal Corporation.
