DUBLIN, IRELAND
San Jose and Dublin established a sister city relationship in 1986. The partnership was initiated under the leadership of San Jose Mayor Tom McEnery and Dublin Lord Mayor Bertie Ahern, who later served as Ireland's Taoiseach or Prime Minister for over a decade.
Located on Ireland's east coast and the Irish Sea, Dublin is Ireland's capital city with over 500,000 residents and a regional population of over 1.1 million. A city of many rivers, the Liffey, Poddle, Dodder and Tolka Rivers dot the Dublin landscape.
One of Europe's most historic cities, Dublin was named the European City of Culture in 1991. For centuries, Dublin and all of Ireland have made great contributions to the world of music, theatre and literature.
Dublin has several outstanding universities and institutes of higher education, including Trinity College, University College Dublin, and Dublin City University. San Jose State University and University College Dublin signed a bilateral university agreement in 2007, including exchanges of students and faculty and collaboration in biotechnology incubators for early-stage companies.
A member of the European Union since 1973, Ireland's economy was transformed in the 1990s and business linkages with Silicon Valley have contributed to the nation's dynamic information technology industry.
