Tips on Applying for Permits
Start Early. Even expedited permits can take time to process, especially when coordinated between multiple departments or agencies. The earlier you can start the process, the better.
Know the Process. Some approvals have mandatory timing requirements for public comment, noticing or review. Make sure you know what’s involved in your approval and plan accordingly. Also know what documents you will need to submit with the application and prepare them in advance.
Take Steps in the Right Order. Make sure you’re getting the right approvals at the right time. For example, if your building permit needs Planning or Public Works approval before it can be issued, you could be facing significant delay if you need to backwards through the process.
Know the Rules. It is not enough to get a permit. You need to be informed about what you can and cannot do under the regulation or law because, even if you don't know the rules, inspectors do. If you have questions, call and ask.
Keep us Informed. It’s our responsibility to make sure that the City is responsive and timely with your projects. San Jose Economic Development staff is available to assist you throughout the process so get us involved early and keep us informed. |
