The spirit of innovation pervades San Jose's world-class community, as well as its economy. We're in the midst of a decade of investment where more than $600 million is being invested in parks, libraries, and neighborhoods, with business and civic leaders working together to enhance San Jose's distinctive quality of life.
More than 60% of the region's new housing is being built in San Jose. San Jose offers a variety of quality neighborhoods and housing options, from urban living to garden suburbs, from historic districts to exclusive golf communities. Recreation opportunities are right at hand, from neighborhood parks to miles of hiking and biking trails near the bay, along the lakes, and within the hills. Residents enjoy 300 days of sunshine each year, and an average annual temperature of 70 degrees.
A forward-looking public sector leads the nation in civic innovation. The City of San Jose is a leader in recycling and smart growth. San Jose is one of the first big cities in the nation to recycle more waste than goes to landfills. San Jose is the safest big city in America, and one of the best-prepared cities in the nation for responding to emergencies. The City's tradition of excellence in financial management has earned San Jose awards and high credit ratings from Wall Street.
Civic innovation springs from partnerships with the corporate, education, and philanthropic community. With San Jose State University, the City is launching the first joint municipal-university library in the nation. With private partners, San Jose developed the nation's first incubator for environmental companies, an award-winning software incubator, and the nation's only incubator for foreign-owned businesses. And the community is the first in the nation to ensure health care for all children.
A cultural pioneer, San Jose elected the nation's first Asian mayor of a large
metropolitan city, as well as the first female mayor.
